Dazzle Ship Vinyl Install - HMS President
The Brief
To commemorate the First World War centenary, 1418 NOW commissioned the wrapping of the ex-Royal Navy warship, HMS President, in dazzle print camouflage vinyl. The design was created by the renowned European artist Tobias Rehberger, one of the most respected artists of our generation. A stunning video of this process by David Kew is available on YouTube. Now berthed at Victoria Embankment on the Thames, the HMS President has become a popular tourist attraction and local landmark.
The Dazzle Ship project won the FESPA Gold Award 2015 for “International Out Of Home Campaign of the Year” and the FESPA People’s Choice Award 2015.

The project involved printing on 2,000 sq. m of polymeric multi-fix vinyl, using the HP LX 3000 printer known for its impressive speed and 3.2m printing width capability.
The installation process was a remarkable achievement, demonstrating innovative problem-solving and teamwork. Despite the challenges posed by the Thames’ fluctuating tides, the team’s dedication shone through with early morning starts at 3am in brisk, pre-dawn conditions. Utilising a small boat during low tide, the crew expertly applied, heated, and smoothed the vinyl over the ship’s intricate hull. The high-altitude aspect of the installation, requiring ropes and harnesses, was handled with precision and care. In just 10 days, the skilled team of 12 installers successfully completed this ambitious and inspiring project.
